Contabo is known for one thing: a lot of virtual server for very little money. The Cloud VPS 4 plan gives you 4 vCPU cores and 8GB of RAM from about $5.28 a month on a long term. That is a fraction of what a managed host charges for the same memory, but you get an unmanaged server: you run it yourself.
This review covers the six Core Cloud VPS plans as Contabo lists them today, what the prices actually refer to, what is included and not included, and who should pick Contabo over a managed host such as Cloudways or a larger provider such as Vultr. For the wider market, see our comparison of the best web hosting companies.
Our short answer: Contabo is a good choice if you are comfortable with the command line and want the most RAM and CPU per dollar for a development server, a self-hosted app or a few sites. It is not for beginners, and it offers no managed support for your site. Read the pricing carefully, because the page shows several prices for each plan.

- Free firewall and DDoS protection.
- Unlimited inbound and outbound traffic (fair usage policies apply), with port speeds from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s.

💰 Contabo pricing (October 2026)
Contabo's page shows three numbers for each plan: a crossed-out regular price, a monthly price, and a "for the first 24 months" price. The page does not say in its text what the price becomes after the 24 months, so check the cart for the renewal.
| Plan | vCPU and RAM | Storage | Month to month | First 24 months (per month) | 24-month total |

⚙️ What "unmanaged" means for you
With Contabo you get a server and an operating system. You, or someone you hire, install the web server, the database, security updates and backups. Contabo's support covers the infrastructure, not your WordPress site or your configuration. That is why the price is low. If you do not want to manage a server, a managed host such as Cloudways or ScalaHosting costs more but does the work for you.
- Good for: development and staging servers, self-hosted tools (Nextcloud, GitLab, n8n), VPNs, email servers, backups and a few sites you can maintain.
- Be careful with: a business site with real traffic where you need uptime and support, unless you have the skills to run it.
🚀 Performance: what we could and could not verify
We found no recent, documented independent test of Contabo's Cloud VPS. Contabo itself positions Core VPS as cost-efficient for "lighter workloads" and Performance VPS for sustained, compute-heavy loads, which is a useful reading of its own price tiers: the cheapest plans are not built to win speed tests. The page lists 99.9% uptime, NVMe on the larger plans and port speeds up to 1 Gbit/s.
If speed matters, test the exact plan and location you intend to use, and compare with Vultr and the best VPS hosting comparison. Our Hetzner comparison helps if you are choosing between the two on price.
🌍 Locations, support and backups
- Locations: 9 regions and 11 locations across the USA, the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia. Choose the region closest to your visitors, and see what a data center is.
- Support: the page text does not describe support channels or hours. Check what is included before you buy, because the plans are unmanaged.
- Backups: snapshots are included, and Auto Backup (daily off-server backups) is an affordable add-on. Do not run production data without an off-server backup.

🎯 Who Contabo is for
✅ Contabo is a good fit if
- You are comfortable with Linux and SSH
- You need lots of RAM and CPU for the money
- You run development, staging, self-hosted apps or a VPN
- You can manage backups and security yourself
❌ Look elsewhere if
- You want someone else to manage the server: see Cloudways' managed plans
- You want premium WordPress support: see Kinsta
- You are a beginner building a first site: Hostinger's shared plans cost less and need no setup
- You want documented performance before you buy
🏆 Final verdict: is Contabo worth it in 2026?
Yes if you can run the server and want the most resources per dollar; no if you want hosting that looks after itself. The RAM, CPU and traffic allowance are hard to beat, and the control is complete. Check the renewal price, set up your own backups and test the plan for performance before you move anything important to it.
