You record a podcast or an explainer video, then spend hours on the timeline cutting stumbles, repeats and gaps. Descript turns that around: it turns the recording into text, and when you delete a word from the text its clip is deleted from the video and audio. On top of that it adds an AI assistant called Underlord, and tools for sound cleanup, recording and translation, all inside one app.
In short: it is worth a trial for people who make spoken content (podcasts, interviews, explainer video) in a language it supports, and it is not for you if your language is missing from Descript's lists of transcription, translation and dubbing languages. The number to calculate is not the plan price alone: media hours and AI credits renew every month and do not roll over.

What is Descript and who is behind it?
Descript is a video and audio editing app built on document-style editing: you see your recording as text and edit it like an article. The pricing page says more than 6 million creators and teams use it, and the company's page, as cited in an earlier check, says it raised $100 million from investors including the OpenAI Startup Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures and Spark Capital. These are the company's own figures, not independent measurements. The company also says your projects are private even from it and that it holds SOC 2 Type II (carried).
Descript features: what do you actually get?
1. Text-based editing and automatic transcription
Descript transcribes your recording automatically in 25 languages according to the pricing page, and, per an earlier check, recognizes more than 8 speakers and labels multitrack recordings by speaker. You delete a word from the text and its clip is removed. That saves real time on spoken content and matters less for visual content that depends on motion and effects.
2. Underlord, the editing assistant
Underlord is an AI assistant you open from the side panel and instruct by typing; it makes polished edits and helps build the video. The cost is in AI credits: a help center article cited in an earlier check says each message to it uses a few credits even if it applies no specific tool, that the cost of its tasks varies by model and task, and that the actual cost is shown in the Usage tab.
3. Audio and video enhancement tools
The paid plans include Studio Sound for one-click noise removal and speech enhancement, Remove Filler Words, Eye Contact correction and Green Screen. Per an earlier check of the help center, Descript caps Studio Sound and filler removal at 30 credits per file or application, so 400 credits (Hobbyist) cover about 13 applications at the maximum.
4. Synthetic voice and voice cloning
It turns text into speech (text to speech), repairs clips in your recording by regenerating them in your voice (Regenerate), and creates a synthetic copy of your own voice. The pricing page lists 25+ stock voices on Hobbyist and Creator and 60+ on Business, and limited use on the free plan.
5. Captions, translation and dubbing
Dynamic captions are unlimited on every plan (carried). The pricing page lists caption translation in 61 languages and dubbing (audio translation) in 30, with caption translation limited on the free plan and included on the paid plans. Translation proofreading is limited to Business (carried). Check the language lists before you pay, as the language section below explains.
6. Remote recording and collaboration
You record guests remotely in Rooms, with up to 10 participants (carried), within monthly recording hours: 2 hours on the free plan (per drive), 5 on Hobbyist, 15 on Creator and 25 on Business. Time-stamped comments and shared editing are available on every plan (carried); Creator allows 1 to 3 seats and Business up to 5, and extra seats are billed separately.
7. Export and publishing
Export resolution is 720p on the free plan (with a watermark), 1080p on Hobbyist and 4K on Creator and Business. The upload limit per file is 1 GB on the free plan, 10 GB on Hobbyist, 20 GB on Creator and 50 GB on Business, and cloud storage is 5 GB, 100 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Creator and Business export the project to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Audition and Pro Tools (carried). If you publish your videos on your own site instead of a ready-made platform, watch the bandwidth your audience uses.

💰 Descript prices in 2026: plans, media hours and credits
According to the official pricing page, prices are per person per month, and the paid plans renew automatically on your card on the billing cycle you choose. Paying yearly saves about 33% on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator and 23% on Business (calculated from the monthly and yearly prices):
| Spec | Free | Hobbyist | Creator ⭐ | Business |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly billing | $0 | $24 | $35 | $65 |
| Yearly billing (per month) | $0 | $16 ($192 a year) | $24 ($288 a year) | $50 ($600 a year) |

| Buy extra hours and credits | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Support | Email and help center (carried) | Email and in-app chat (carried) | Email and in-app chat (carried) | Priority with a guaranteed response time (carried) |
An Enterprise plan is available at a custom price with SSO, SCIM, audit logs and a dedicated account manager (carried). Business has features such as Brand Studio, translation proofreading and priority support with a response-time guarantee (carried).
Extra hours and credits (top-ups)
They are sold on Creator and Business only (the pricing page says those plans have access to top-ups), used after you exhaust your monthly allowance, valid for 12 months from purchase and shared across all seats in the workspace, and not refundable (carried). The pack sizes and prices below come from an earlier check, because the pricing page does not list them:
| Type | Pack | Price | Unit price |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI credits | 350 credits | $35 | $0.10 a credit |
| 1,000 credits | $80 | $0.08 a credit | |
| 4,000 credits | $200 | $0.05 a credit | |
| Media hours | 5 hours | $25 | $5 an hour |
| 20 hours | $80 | $4 an hour | |
| 50 hours | $150 | $3 an hour |
Quick maths examples
Media is counted by the length of what you upload or record, not by the length of the finished product, still images use one second each, and a one-hour Rooms session uses 60 minutes however many people join (carried). If your episode is recorded as 90 raw minutes, Hobbyist's 10 hours cover about 6 episodes a month and Creator's 30 hours about 20.
Hobbyist is $16 a month billed yearly, and Creator at $24 adds 4K export and top-ups

Refunds and cancellation: read them before paying yearly
The refund policy in Descript's help center, as cited in an earlier check, says a plan refund is available within 48 hours of the invoice date and within 7 days for editor seats, and names no separate window for yearly plans. The company says it does not give prorated refunds for unused time. Cancelling, downgrading or switching from yearly to monthly takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, while upgrading or switching from monthly to yearly takes effect immediately and credits the remainder of your previous plan to the new one. You cancel from the subscription page in your account.
🌍 Does Descript support your language?
The answer depends on the lists on the pricing page: 25 languages for automatic transcription (on every plan, including the free one), 61 for caption translation and 30 for dubbing. The transcription list includes English, French, German, Spanish, Turkish and Hindi among others. Find your language on those lists before you pay, because the transcript is what the whole text-based workflow rests on.
If your language is not on the list, test a tool that supports it for automatic captions. CapCut's help center, for example, says its automatic captions support about 30 languages or more (see the CapCut Pro review), though CapCut does not edit through the transcript in the same way. For voices generated from text in different languages read the ElevenLabs vs Descript comparison.
Free plan vs paid: what is actually locked?
You do not need a credit card to open the free plan, and it lets you record, edit and mix. But it limits you to one media hour a month, 100 AI credits granted once only and 720p export with a watermark, with limited use of Underlord and the audio and video tools, and no in-app support chat (carried). It suits a trial or occasional short clips, not regular production.
⚖️ Descript vs the alternatives: where it wins and where it falls behind
| Tool | Published price | Strongest at | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Descript ⭐ | From $16 a month (yearly) or $24 (monthly) | Editing spoken content through text | Transcription in 25 languages; check yours |
| Riverside | Pro: $29 a month or $24 billed yearly, and a 14-day trial | Studio-quality recording with unlimited text-based editing and an editing agent | Best for people who record remote guests and want the whole platform in one place |
| CapCut Pro | $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year, and the price varies by country | Short clips, captions and templates | Automatic captions in about 30 languages or more, per its help center (carried) |
| DaVinci Resolve | A free version, and Studio at $295 | Professional editing and color grading | A traditional timeline and a longer learning curve |
The key difference: Descript saves time on recorded speech as long as transcription is possible in your language, Riverside combines recording, editing and publishing in one platform at a similar price, CapCut suits short clips and captions, and DaVinci Resolve is stronger for complex visual editing if you can accept the learning curve. For desktop editing with a simpler interface read the Filmora review, and to transcribe meetings instead of editing video read the Fireflies.ai review.
🎯 Who is Descript for, and who is it not for?
✅ It suits you if you:
- Make podcasts, interviews or explainer video in a supported language
- Spend your time deleting stumbles, filler and repeats
- Record remote guests and want to edit them in the same place
- Work in a small team that needs comments and shared editing
- Want captions and clips ready to post on social platforms
❌ It does not suit you if you:
- Record in a language outside Descript's transcription list
- Rely on motion, effects and advanced color grading
- Work only on a phone or tablet
- Have a computer below the minimum: 8 GB of memory and macOS 14 or Windows 11 (carried)
- Want a fixed budget with no credits that renew and run out each month

🏆 The verdict: is Descript worth it in 2026?
It is worth it for people who make spoken content in a language it supports, and not for people whose recordings are outside its language lists. Its real value is editing time: you edit speech the way you edit a document, and you get Studio Sound, filler removal, guest recording and 4K export in one app from $16 a month billed yearly.
But the drawbacks are plain: the transcription, translation and dubbing lists may not include your language, the monthly allowance does not roll over, Underlord's cost follows usage and is not known beforehand, and refunds are limited to 48 hours with no prorated refund. Start with the free plan on a real file in a supported language, measure your hours and credits for a full month, and do not pay yearly before you know your numbers.
